Folding The Prism
VIDEO BY Wefilmphilly
Folding the Prism is a mural by Jessie Unterhalter and Katey Truhn that responds to the Spring Garden neighborhood’s rich textile history of the early 20th century. On this project we worked to develop a design that draws on urban topography, patterns found in nature, and woven textiles to explore themes of movement and symmetry.
Through bold color combinations this work combines visual language from its immediate surroundings into elaborate abstractions, creating a dialogue at the intersection of history, ecology, and contemporary painting practices. This mix of referents help weave the city’s textile history into the social fabric of Philadelphia.
This six story mural was painted in collaboration with Mural Arts Philadelphia’s Restorative Justice program.Restorative Justice provides formerly incarcerated individuals job training and mentorship to restore and transform individual lives and communities, helping to break the cycle of recidivism through public art.
